It all began on July 4th, 2024. Tomek and Anna came to the Mikolajczak family’s Fourth of July party, where David met them both for the very first time. A few days later, Tomek reached out to invite David to their home to hang out with friends. After a long workday, David had to decline. But then came a message that would change everything.
Tomek wrote to David about Anna’s cousin, Kathy. He described her as easygoing, family-oriented, driven, and open to meeting someone new—even on a blind date. He even shared her number, along with a gentle nudge that she and David just might have a lot in common. David replied with excitement, saying he would reach out the next morning.
“Hey Kathy, how’s it going? This is David Mikolajczak, a friend of Tom’s who works with my mom on some jobs. He told me a little bit about you and to find out the rest myself haha so I think we should set something up!”
Two days later, on July 15th, they met for their very first date at La Dolce Vita in Lemont. From the moment Kathy stepped out of the Uber, everything felt different. David had told her he’d be wearing a black shirt and white shorts, and as soon as she walked toward him with a warm embrace and the words, “Are you David?”, his heart was captured. The night flowed effortlessly—filled with laughter, shared stories, dreams for the future, and the kind of comfort that usually takes years to build.
Before their first date was even over, they were already planning to host Christmas and the Fourth of July together for their families in the future. That night, however, was cut short by a wave of tornadoes sweeping through the Chicago area—a wild and unforgettable sign they both took as confirmation from above that they had found the right person, in the right place, at the right time.
Their second date came quickly, later that same week. They hopped between four or five different restaurants and bars, starting in Frankfort and ending at Durbin’s, where David met Kathy’s sister, Paula, for the first time. By then, their bond was undeniable. As the night drew to a close, David admitted to Kathy that he wanted to kiss her. Moments later, as they sat in the car before she went inside, they shared their very first kiss—something that felt as natural as it was magical.
That night also brought another milestone: Kathy invited David to her parents’ surprise 30th wedding anniversary party. Without hesitation, David said yes. After pitching a complete-game shutout in a Palos Marlins playoff game, he joined Kathy and met her extended family, soaking in the joy of the celebration and the warmth of being by her side.
The very next day, it was Kathy’s turn to meet David’s family. They grilled out together, and David’s mom gave Kathy a tour of their home. She fit in seamlessly—her smile, her laugh, and her kind presence lighting up the day. David could only sit back and marvel at how perfectly she belonged.
The love story that began with a single introduction blossomed quickly. Just four and a half months later, on December 3rd, 2024, David and Kathy got engaged at their favorite walking spot in Naples, Florida. It was the best day of their lives—at least until November 29th, 2025, the day they would stand before God, their families, and their closest friends to promise each other forever.
